Join us for the party of the century as Commonweal marks 100 years of continuous publication

The evening will include a cocktail reception overlooking the Hudson River, followed by dinner and a program honoring Tania Tetlow, President of Fordham University, with the inaugural Commonweal Centennial Award.

A tradition of gathering for conversation and community in support of Commonweal…

For nearly two decades, Commonweal has hosted a bi-annual gala, gathering friends, writers, and readers from around the country to celebrate Commonweal and honor individuals whose noteworthy work is in service to the common good, informed and inspired by their Catholic faith. Over the years, we are proud to have honored luminaries like Mark Shields and Amy Goldman; John Sexton and Tim Shriver; Sr. Carol Keehan and John DeGoia; George Mitchell and Kerry Robinson. And over the years, we have called this award The Catholic in the Public Square Award, as the individuals we’ve honored have been leaders whose impact has shaped not just the church, but society as a whole.

This year, we are pleased to honor Tania Tetlow, the 33rd President of Fordham University and the first layperson and first woman to ever take the office at Fordham. President Tetlow will receive the inaugural Commonweal Centennial Award.

READ THE PRESS RELEASE

At this pivotal moment of our centennial, when Commonweal looks back to celebrate all that we’ve achieved and looks forward to what our second century can bring, we are inspired by President Tetlow’s model: her lay leadership; her commitment to issues of justice for women, the LGBTQ+ community, and others; her attention to forming and informing the next generation of Catholics and all good people of goodwill; and her spirit of knowledge-seeking and creativity. We’re thrilled not only to honor President Tetlow, but also to mark the long friendship between  Fordham and Commonweal, as two Catholic institutions in New York City dedicated to questions that enrich the mind and sustain the spirit.
