Commonweal contributing writer Cathleen Kaveny, the Darald and Juliet Libby Millenium Professor of Theology and Law at Boston College, and John T. McGreevy, the Charles and Jill Fischer Provost and the Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame, each recently discussed their scholarly vocations on different episodes of a podcast hosted by the 'Christian Scholar's Review.' The podcast, 'Saturdays at Seven,' hosted by Professor Todd C. Ream, invites scholars from around the country to explore the relationship between their faith and their roles as academics.
On her episode, Cathleen Kaveny emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary scholarship, as well as the virtues — humility, a willingness to seek assistance from colleagues — that such scholarship requires. "Interdisciplinary work isn’t just bringing in somebody to make a guest appearance in your field’s television series," Kaveny said. "Interdisciplinary work is spending a fair amount of time studying the other discipline so you can understand how they see the world."
On his episode, John T. McGreevy reflected on his work as provost — and the unique role that Notre Dame plays in Catholic higher education. "We want to be the best global Catholic research university," McGreevy said, "on par with but distinct from the world’s best private universities."
Commonweal readers will be familiar with Kaveny and McGreevy for their extensive contributions to the magazine over the years. In recent years, McGreevy has written for Commonweal about post-World War II war-crimes trials in Japan, how Catholicism became truly global, and the historical relationship between the papacy and democracy. For her part, Kaveny has recently written about the Trump Court's aggressive agenda, human rights and 'Dignitas Infinita', and contemporary abortion politics.
